È stato fondato nel 2017 a San Pietroburgo, in Russia, come progetto artistico-politico in risposta alla necrofilia culturale e alla necropolitica dello Stato russo. La risposta del Partito alla necropolitica è stata il necroattivismo. Da allora il Partito ha agito come gruppo d’affinità in Russia e sporadicamente in altri luoghi della Terra. Il gruppo imitava un partito politico, ma in realtà non lo è mai stato e non ha mai avuto un’organizzazione di tipo partitico. Dal 2022 The Party of the Dead è diventato una delle iniziative artistiche antiwar più importanti provenienti dalla Russia, ma esiste per lo più in esilio. È stato avviato un procedimento penale contro il fondatore del partito, Maxim Evstropov, accusato di “offesa ai sentimenti dei credenti”: è stato inserito nella lista federale dei ricercati e arrestato in contumacia dal tribunale russo.

Party of the Dead was founded in 2017 in Saint Petersburg, Russia, as an artistic-political project responding to the cultural necrophilia and necropolitics of the Russian state. The Party’s response to necropolitics was necroactivism. Since then, the Party has operated as an affinity group in Russia and occasionally elsewhere around the world. It imitated a political party, yet it was never an actual party and never possessed a party-like organizational structure. Since 2022, The Party of the Dead has become one of the most significant anti-war artistic initiatives to emerge from Russia, although it now exists largely in exile. Criminal proceedings have been initiated against the Party’s founder, Maxim Evstropov, on charges of “offending the feelings of believers.” He has been placed on Russia’s federal wanted list and was arrested in absentia by a Russian court.
