“Hello my name is Aram and I make art with the name Fylysteen. My father was born in Iraq. His father was born in Palestine and was very Palestinian. My father’s mother was born in Palestine also but her parents came from the Ottoman Empire modern day Turkey and they were Armenian. When I was in Jerusalem I know there’s a group, organization called Al Qaws, which supports LGBTQ people in Palestine.

When I was walking down the Bethlehem road to visit my grandparent's old house and see my cousins I tried to be as straight as possible. Because also there’s an occupation, a military occupation. And on top of the Israeli soldiers there are Israeli settlers who walk around with very large guns. And we have to try to be safe. And it's not easy.

I also work with other artists with our group called Palexico. And we make drawings and music and videos. Also I have a comic book that I make that has some characters and we talk about queer Palestinian-ness. And I want to say I appreciate all of the LGBTQ artists in the community and I'm happy to be supporting each other and sharing each other's art”.

"Ciao mi chiamo Aram e faccio arte con il nome Fylysteen. Mio padre è nato in Iraq. Suo padre è nato in Palestina ed era molto palestinese. Anche la madre di mio padre è nata in Palestina, ma i suoi genitori provenivano dall'odierna Turchia dell'Impero Ottomano ed erano armeni. Quando ero a Gerusalemme facevo parte di un gruppo, un'organizzazione chiamata Al Qaws, che sostiene le persone LGBTQ in Palestina. Quando cammino lungo la strada di Betlemme per visitare la vecchia casa di mio nonno e vedere i miei cugini, cerco di essere il più “normale” possibile. Perché c'è un'occupazione, un'occupazione militare. E oltre ai soldati israeliani ci sono coloni israeliani che vanno in giro con grandi pistole. Dobbiamo cercare di stare più al sicuro possibile. E non è facile. Lavoro anche con altri artisti con il nostro gruppo chiamato Palexico. Realizziamo disegni, musica e video. Inoltre ho realizzato un fumetto che tratta personaggi queer nell"ambito della comunità Palestinese.

Ci tengo a dire che apprezzo tutti gli artisti LGBTQ della comunità e sono felice che ci supportiamo a vicenda per condividere reciprocamente la nostra arte”.
